DETECTIVE PARTY INVITED. PRINCE AT VANDERBU/TS . NEW YORK, September 15. A score of detectives engaged in investigating the bold theft of gems from Lady Mountbatten (who with Lord Louis Mountbatten is a member of the Prince of party) and Mrs. Cosden, the wife of an oil multi-millionaire. have made little progress. The American woman was the heavier loser, as her jewels included a black pearl ring valued at £10.000, a pigeon-blood ruby worth £6000. and many other pieces of jewellery running into thousands of pounds each in value. The Prince on Wednesday night attended a great party at the home of Williaijfc K. Vanderbilt, the railway magnate. Dozens of detectives, dressed as guests and butlers, mingled with the crowd, and ""TiafTles'' was apparently completely baffled. Jewels valued at £40,000. surae of them belonging to Lady Louis Monntbatten, and the remainder the property of Mrs. -J. S. Cosden and Mrs. Richard Norton, were stolen from the Lon" Island home of Mr. J. S. Cosden. who was entertaining the Royal party. Lady Mountbatteii informed the polite that thieves entered her bedroom and stole the. jewels while she wa3 absent at dinner. Thp other jewels w<?re taken also while their owners were absent from their bedrooms.
