A CHAMPION BRICKLAYER.

GETS ONE MONTH. PROBATION ABUSED. On a charge of failing to comply with the terms of his release on probation, Daniel Carline (36) appeared before Mr. F. K. Hunt in the Police Court yesterday afternoon. He was charged with, having been adjudged bankrupt in June, 1922, he had failed to keep accounts of his business operations. The original charges of having contracted debts of £347 18/5, £83 10/, and £81 19/6 without having reasonable expectations of being able to pay, were also revived. The probation officer (Mr. J. J. Campbell) sa.id that accused had failed' to report regularly and frequently changed his address without notification. He

was no use on probation. , Chief Detective Cummings said that i accused was the champion bricklayer of New Zealand, and being such an excel- j lent workman he was capable of earning high wages. He had not kept up his maintenance payments and the police had been searching for him for some time. Mr. P. K. Hunt: I will give him a month. Mr. McKay, who appeared for accused, said that his wife -would suffer if he was kept from work. Mr. Hunt: I would give him three months if it were not for the sake of his wife. He must learn a lesson. He will get a month on the first charge and the others will be adjourned.
