THE Y.W.C.A.
ITS WORK AMONG WOMEN. AN APPEAL FOR SUPPORT. The service rendered to the women and girls of Auckland by the .Young Women's Christian Association is becoming more widely recognised and appreciated as the scope of the organisation's s activities widens. The well-equipped . building in Upper Queen Street is at the service of all girls and women irre- ' spective of membership, and every day t hundreds of the slighter sex find the < lounge, reading-room, rest-rooms and , information bureau, where two attendants are employed, of great service. The hostel and cafeteria, which are * important departments, need no recom I ' mendation, the proof of their value and ' popularity being evidenced by the large ? numbers of women that patronise them. I But the Y.W.C.A. carries on a stili ' more important community work through , the Girl Citizens' Movement and its ; many clubs, wherein character-training i is the object of every undertaking. The ( girl away from home is by no means the i only one who benefits by the organised , lectures and other helpful attractions , which are provided. The immigration j and educational departments represent , yet another phase of a many-sided orga- • nisation, while the health and recreation , department offer over 800 girls an i opportunity to improve themselves phy- i sically. ' , The cost of maintaining such an insti- 1 tution is, naturally, high, and, while j members' fees total £586 and donations . swell the fund by over £1000, the i activities of the Y.W.C.A. in this city [ would have to be drastically curtailed - were it not for assistance given by < friends outside ..the movement. Hence, 1 the association appeals to the public I annually for financial support. A canvaee ] is to be commenced in the city next ' week. It is estimated that £1800 will be required for the year 1924-25 if the work for the girls of the city is to be ' maintained at its full standard of 1 efficiency. This sum represents the difference between estimated income and ' expenditure for the year. ' In making an appeal to the public ! the organisation tenders no apology, since it is felt that the Y.W.C.A. has \ been entrusted with a service to all women, and that the community gener- ' ally looks to the association to discharge ! that trust faithfully and efficiently. Without-funds, this would be impossible.
