POLICE-SERGEANT INJURED.

STRUCK BT TRAM CAB. AT GKAFTOX BRIDGE TRAFFIC PODJT. About lialf-pasfc eight this morning Sergeant F. Hammond, of the Xewton Police_ Force, was knocked down by a tramcar while talking to the constable on point duty at Grafton Bridge, and he had a narrow" escape from serious injury, if not death, the timely action of the constable being a factor which, minimised his injuries. It was a busy time at the intersection, and the sergeant aparently failed to notice an approaching tram when, after talking to the constable on duty in the course of his round of inspection, he turned to go to the footpath. A city-bound car, which had received the signal to proceed, struck the sergeant and swung him forward a couple of yards and against the centre pole. At the same time an outward bound car approached the pole and threatened to run over the sergeant's legs which were thrown across the track. Constable J. MeCann, who was on point duty, realised the perilous position of his senior officer, and quickly dragged his body from further danger. Sergeant Hammond miraculously escaped with a severe blow on the head which dazed him. but after receiving attention by Dr. Murray nearby he wa3 able to proceed to his home "in West Street, Xewton.
