NEW ZEALAND CHAMPIONSHIP

DUNCAN. * j A high wind and drying greens made ' conditions exceedingly difficult for the opening day of tne New Zealand golf championships at the Middlemore links, Mangere, to-day. As a matter of fact the wind, having shifted to the north, was in a direction not previouslyexperienced this wee.: Dy those who had been practising to accustom themselves to the links, and it thoroughly upset calculations. The morning ro'nd was started promptly to time, but in the outward journey many of the players were baffled for a time by the conditions, and lost time by getting I into trouble where they had alter- ! nately to play against and with the ' wind. The one player who was right on his form was Arthur Duncan, of i Wellington, who went out in two under j bogey and came home in four under I par, doing the round in 71, a record for i the links. His nearest competitor on ' the round was Kapi Tareha, of Napier, ! the Napier champion, who went round in 76, one under bogey. The only others j who did the round in" less than 80 were ! R. D. Wright, the Middlemore cham- I pion (77), H. B. Lusk (79), and the ! professionals, Mcintosh, of Wellington j (79), Goss, of Wanganui (79). and Moss (79). Bid well's morning round was 84. MANAWATU CHAMPIONSHIPS. (By Telegraph.—Press Association.) PALMERSTON NORTH, this day. The Manawatu Ladies' Golf Club's championship tourney was continued today. The semi-final resulted:—Miss Gambrill (Wellington) beat Mrs. Collinson (Manawatu), six and five; Miss Seifert (Manawatu) beat Miss Conway (Wellington), five and three.
