AWKWARD BILLS.
AND OUTSIDE INFLUENCES. GAMING ACT AIMENDMENT. (By Telegraph.—Parliamentary Reporter.) W"F-__LINGTOC-", Thursday.
The members of the House were in a working mood to-day and cleared up a number of local bills with a few small Government measures. The Premier consequently moved the adjournment at 11 o'clock, but Mr. Wilford suggested taking advantage of the good opportunity and going on. Mr. Massey's reply was that there would soon be plenty to do. There were several days of work in the Land Bill just to hand, while he would take the opportunity of going on with the Electoral Bill. i This aroused much among ! the Labour members, Mr. Sullivan bringing it to a climax with the question: Do you really want it? Mr. Massey smilingly declared with emphasis that he would 'bring it in again, and personally would accept it as it stood. •Mr. Sullivan: It would serve you right if we gave it to you. (Laughter.) The (Premier continued to give a general idea to members, regarding business, and mentioned the Gaming Amendment Bill, which he said would come on definitely. Mr. Parry: We will see! Mr. Massey: I know the power behind the throne outside this House, and it is not going to be allowed to interfere with the legislation of the New Zealand Parliament, that's straight. Mr. Parry: There are powers inside this House, too. - Mr. Massey: I know, and they are very obedient to powers outside. filr. Langstone: Do you refer to the Racing Conference? Mr. Massey (pointing to the Labour benches) retorted: The hon. gentleman knows perfectly well what I refer to, and so does every member in that corner.
