TALK OF SPECULATION TRANSFERS AT A PROFIT. .Etj Telegraph.— Press Association.) WELLINGTON, this day. A question as to whether profiteering 'is going'on in respect of soldiers' houses in cities was suggested in the course of discussion when representative Dunedin returned soldiers interviewed Mr. Massey to-day regarding Government loans for the erection of soldiers' houses i in Dunedin. | Mr. P. ,S. Anderson, in reply io Mr. Ma3sey, said he did not know of any speculating in Dunedin. j Mr. Massey said it had been reported |to him that there was nothing to pre- ' vent returned soldiers from applying to the State Advances Department for loans. He was not going to allow the purchase of any more houses by soldiers jor anyone else. j The Hon. D. McLeod said advances to soldiers last year for houses amounted to £540,000. During the last quarter above 117 soldiers' houses (out of 187) had been transferred to civilians, I having been sold by the soldiers, and I the profit being up to £500. He had instances in which there was a profit up to £900.
