IN A CYCLONE.
« I — MAUNGANfL'I'S l-XP-SRIEXCE. The R.M.S. Maunganui, which arrived at Wellington on Tuesday from San ■Francisco, ran into a cyclone three days after ah'e left the Californian port. Sign, of a severe disturbance were noticeable when the vessel was steaming along in fine weather by a steep fall of the barometer. The ship cleared the Golden Gate on Wednesday afternoon, August 13, and on tlie following Saturday the cyclone swept down on her. Mountainous seas were running, causing the vessel to roll heavily, although she maintained her reputation as a good sea boat and came through the ordeal unscathed. During the rolling of the vessel a Wellington passenger was pitched from one side of the smoke-room to the other, but got off without any injury. Violent rainsijualls and the shrieking gale lasted throughout the night, but ou the following morning the Maunganui emerged from the area of the disturbance, and line weather returned in a few hours. While loading fruit nt Rarotonga a heavy swell delayed operations, and two days after leaving tho island the Maunganui encountered some of the bad weather which had been reported to the eastward of the Xew Zealand coast last week. The Maunganui brought no American fresh fruit owing to the Government embargo as a precautionary measure against the introduction of foot-and-mouth disease, which broke out in the Western States some months ago. At Rarotonga the Maunganui loaded 656 tons of fruit for Wellington, comprising 'bananas, oranges, and a few cases of j tomatoes.
