BIG JEWELLERY THEFT.
DETECTIVES MAKE AN ARREST. YOL'XG AUSTRALIAN" REMANDED. With tho arrest of a young man yesterday by Senior Detective Ward and Detectives McHugh :md Moon, the recent burglary at Meltzer Bros., pawnbrokers, of O.i, Victoria Street, is recalled. Lluring the. night of July 4 last entrance was effected nt the rear of the premises by breaking a window and tho panels of a door, and the removal of an iron bar. This morning, at the Police Court, hofom Mr. F. K. Hunt, S.M.. Rupert .Tames Conncll (Mr. A. Moody! wari charged ■with breaking and entering the shop of Meltzer F-ros. on .Inly 4, and stealing 23 gold and diamond rings, eight ladies" expanding wristlet watches, ten gold chains, and a cigarette case, of a. total value of about £301. Chief Detective Cumniiiigs said that accused recently arrived from Australia. Only a small amount of the stolen property had been traced to accused. A remand to August 11 was nsked for. the Chief Detective objecting to bail being given at this stage. Connell was remanded in custody.
