PRACTICAL TRAINING.

FOR MEDICAL STUDENTS. CLINICAL COURSES PROPOSED. A very cordial reception was given by the Auckland Hospital Board last night to a suggestion that a course of clinical instruction for medical students be given at the Auckland Hospital. The subject was brought before the Board by Drs. C. H. Tewsley and K. H. B. lUilsom on behalf of the hospital's honorary staff. Dr. Tewsley stated Hint the establishment of a clinical course, as distinct from theoretical, had been effected in Christchurch. H was proposed to put on three different courses of three terms, similiar to the scheme in Dunedin. It would be beneficial for everybody, students, staff and patient* Mr. E. H. rotter: It is practically a scheme for instituting a medical school in Auckland. Dr. Tewsley replied that it was hardly that. Only clinical instruction was to be given; a medical school involved theoretical. It was proposed that fees should be the same as those at Dunedin. Men who were going to -prove experts in the profession were those who were handling patients, not reading books. The honorary staff were keen to take up the work of instruction and already ten had stated their willingness to do so. Dr. Milsom emphasised the value of the students in helping to keep hospital records. Mr. W. Wallace, chairman, stated that the scheme was a good one and he would like the honorary staff to supply full details in writing. It was a matter for the supenntendant to report whether it would be practical and beneficial to the hospital. Hp hoped it was the thin edge of the wedge for the establishment of a medical school. The only professional training in .Auckland va*s the law and he was glad to see the honorary staff taking such an interest in hospital affairs. On the chairman's suggestion it was decided that the smpm'ntrndant Dr McGuire. should report to the P, oa rd on the scheme, full details of which should be made available.
