EVOLUTION STILL GOING ON.
One of the worst of errors is the tendency to think of evolution in the past tense, as if it had stopped, writes Professor .T. A. Thompson. But man's relatively short life is hardly more than a tick of the evolution clock, and continuity of observation is difficult. Hence the interest of the patient studies which Professor Henry B. Cratnpton has been making of the land snails (Partula) of Moorea, the island adjacent to Tahiti, in the Society Group. On the basis of personal collections and observations proof lias been obtained of evolution changes that have taken place in the brief interval between 1907 and 1923. There is enlargement in the areas occupied by particular kinds of land snails, and there are even more significant changes in the individual and colonial biological characters. The foundation of change continues to flow.
