BRASS BAND CONTEST.
AIUIAXUEMENTS TOll FEBRUARY. An event, that is eagerly anticipated by bandsmen and the musical fraternity in general, is the first New Zealand Brass Band Championship, which is to bo held in Auckland in February next. The programme, which has just been issued, shows that provision has been made for A, B, and C grade band contests, a hymn selection for the 3lcLcod Cup and numerous solo competitions. A competition open to boys under tin; age of nineteen, in which they may play auy instrument and selection chosen by themselves, lias also been arranged. The cash prize list provides for £1000 divided as follows:—"A" grade bands, £410; "B"' grade bands, £270; "C" grade bauds £65. ]t should bo noted that the inclusion of a "C" class is an innovation and has been put on the programme for the encouragement of voumrer bandsmen, and has not previously been included in a contest. There is also a quickstep championship event for both "A" and "B" grade bands, for which f 9O and £75 prize money is offered. There are, in addition to the New Zealand Championship Shield, four other shields for which annual competition is held in New Zealand. It is now known that at least two bands are likely to come over from Australia to attend the competitions. These are the Toowoomba Municipal and the . celebrated Malvern Tramways Bands. Accommodation in this city will probably be severely taxed durino- the time of the contest, one band Whamrarei having already secured its hotel. j Entries for <he competition dose on i November 1, 1024.
