TIMBER ROYALTIES.

PROTEST FROM COUNTIES. SERIOUS LOSS OF REVENUE. (By Telesraph.—Press Association.) HOKITIKA, this day. Westland County Council held a special meeting of protest last night against the report of the Royal Commission affectim; timber royalties. It was resolved to convene a conference of West Coast counties at Greymouth for August 4 and invite representatives of the Government and Coast members of the Legislature to discuss the whole position. The opinion was expressed that the lepal claims of local government bodies were totally ignored by the report, which, if adopted, will have a disastrous result on the future revenue of JocaJ It is proposed to ask the Government to defer discussion on the report pending the conference, at which general resolutions of local bodies will be formulated for consideration of Parliament. North Island counties are being asked to co-operate by also holding a conference of protest.
