OLD FIREMEN FOREGATHER.

The Old Firemen and Salvage Association held its sixteenth annual smoke-concert in the Druids' Hall. Newton, on Saturday evening. The president, Mr. 11. Jane, supported hy vico-presidents Liirukiu ami Williams, presided over a gathering of about 100 past fire fighters. The president made a short speech, and advised all those present who were not already members, to enrol at once. Many of the members present were wearing their service medals, oue man having 37 years to his credit, and still being engaged in fire iightinjr. Mr. Sticbbury, who joined the Auckland Hrijiade in 1861, proposed the toast of "Old Comrades." and recalled some very amusing methods by which fires were extinguished in the old days. Captain Field responded, and also told some laughable tales of the trials and difficulties with which old firemen had to contend. An interesting trophy was displayed to the gathering, in tke shape of the original helmet worn by Superintendent Asher, the first superintendent of the. Auckland Brigade. Mr. Purcell presided at the piano, and a most enjoyable musical programme was given, proceedings terminating with the sieging of the National Anthem.
