INSTITUTE OF HORTICULTURE.
AUCKLAND COUNCIL. The first meeting at the eiccutive committee appointed at the uieetins held in the Council Chamber of the Town Hall last Monday was held at the Pacific Club on Friday afternon. There weer present:— Messrs. H. Goldie, H S. Izard, Geo. A. Green, \V. J. Wernham, Harvey Turner, S. I. Crookes, W. S. Hill, an* A. B. Webber. Mr. H. Goldie was elected executive chairman, and Messrs. Crookes, Hill, Turner and Webber were added to the committee. Messrs. Izard and Grcim were appointed delegates to the Dominion conference. A letter was received from the Auckland Acclimatisation Society (plant branch) urging the necessity of a botanical garden for Auckland, and asking the assistance of the Auckland Cournll of the Institute. The letter was received and endorsed, noi a resolution carried to brins tht? matter before the City Council as soon as possible. The secretary rpail the remits already in from other centres, wbk-li iv thu main were approved. M«*urs. S. I. Crooko ami Geo. A. Greim were appointed a committee to draw np a suitable remit with v view of securing the opinions and u<l vice of the best authorities in the Dominion. A committee was appointed to draft a remit with the view of securing a suitable medium for publicity for the transactions of the Institute, and to provide for regular issue of a bulletin. Mr. Hill brought up the question of the need for a plant breeding station in the Auckland district specialising in subtropical fruits. This, he said, may well be considered •"?• an objective o! Vie Auckland Council.
