WAITEMATA COUNTY.

THE QUARRIES QUESTION. PROBLEM OF SUPPLY. Reference was made at the meeting of the Waitemata County Council to the difficulty of obtaining supplies of metal for the •programme of road construction proposed to be undertaken from loan moneys. The Oakley Quarry and the Waitakere Quarry at present belong to groups of ridings, and it has been euggeeted that these should be taken over as county undertakings. On the acquisition of these quarries it was pointed out that only certain ridings would be benefited by their opening-up, and special orders were passed limiting the cost of maintenance and capital to those particular ridings. At the meeting of the council Mr. F. W. Grigg moved that the Government be asked to pass a clause in the WashingUp Bill authorising the recission of these special orders. In doing so, he said that the question of obtaining metal was now a county one, and above the parochialism that at present prevailed in regard to this matter. After discussion the motion, covering both quarries, was carried. It was reported by the engineer that the plan of Takapuna Coast Road, from Deep Creek Wharf Road to Vaughan's, had been approved by the Survey Department, and at the request of the engineer the council decided to endorse the plan. The council allocated £100 from the Takapuna Riding Fund for the improvement of a short section of Campbell's Bay Road, which was reported by the engineer to be in bad condition in wet weather. Approval was given by the council to a proposal to prepare a petition to secure the appointment of a river board to cover the whole course of the Kumeu and Knipara Rivers, from Waitakere to Ohirangi, the blockages in these streams having caused much damage in the recent floods, and the council also decided to assist in the formation of the proposed board.
