COMMUNITY SINGING.

ANOTHER LIVELY HOUR. Another very large audience, assembled at the Town Hall for the weekly community singing to-day. Mr. E. C. Cutten, S.M., presided, Mr. R. H. Marryatt, assisted by the Rev. Jasper Calder, was the song leader, and Mr. JV. R. Blomfield acted as accompanist. A number of old favourites, including "KillarneyS" "Bells of St. Mary's," nnd "Barney Google," were sung in the usual spirited manner, and Mr. Manning sang the verses of "Finiculi Finicula," the audience taking up the choruses. Mr. Cutten, S.M., in a few remarks at the end of the singing drew attention to the fact, that Mr. Tom Burnnand, who so often acts as accompanist at the "sings," was ill in hospital. •He moved, and it was unanimously carried, that the audience's good wishes be conveyed to Mr. Burnnand. The chairman also eulogised the value of community singing. "Take the 'cheer-germ' into your.homes," he said. "Teach the children, and so keep the home together. I am sure you would then spend many happy evenings." Regarding the adverse criticism levelled, by a few people, at the committee's decision to use the amounts of the collections for the "half-way house," members of the committee stated that, as their decision was the outcome of j a unanimous public vote, they had I nothing further to say on the matter.
