TEACHERS AND HOUSES.

RENT-FARMING SUGGESTED. A return furnished to the Auckland Education Board to-day at the request of the Department showed that in the Auckland district there are nine teachers' residences attached to schools which are not occupied by the teachers. It was stated by a member that teachers should be required to live in the tomes provided for them. Mr. Smell: The trouble is that the houses are out-of-date, and unsuitable for occupation by the teachers. It was stated that there was an impression that some teachers made money by letting the houses provided as teachers' residences. Mr. Patterson mentioned a country school, the teacher of which had a farm on which he lived, while he let the residence alongside the school, which was provided for the teacher. Not only that, he had put down in grass four acres of the best of the school ground, which he let in conjunction with the , house. Much of the remainder of the J school ground was swamp, and that four acres was required by the committee as a playground for the children, but the committee had been unable to get hold of it. On the chairman's motion it was decided that, where a suitable honse was provided for the headmaster, he shall be required to live in it. Meantime a report is to be obtained on the condition of the unoccupied residences, and the alterations required to make them suitable for occupation by the headmasters. Incidentally the present use of such residences .will also be reported on.
