RECORD FARM YEAR.
VALVES MORE THAN QUANTITY MORE INTENSIVE METHODS. (By Telegrapn.—Press Association.'. WELLINGTON, this day. The annual meeting of the New .Zealand Council of Agriculture opened today, Mr. W. Perry presiding. The Minister of Agriculture, the Hon. TV. Nosworthy, said the council during the whole of its existence had kept clear of party politics. He thought that was a <*ood thing for all. He understood that the Royal Agricultural Society would take over the functions of the conference injuture. That was a progressive step. The first Royal Show would be held at Palmerston North next spring, and ho gathered that its success was assured. Mr. Terry, in his address, said the past year had proved a record one as far as "the total values of New Zealand farm produce were concerned, but this had been obtained by high values rather than by an increase in quantity, with one noticeable exception., that of dairy produce. Another year of equal prices would put many a farmer into a sound position again. He stressed the fact that farmers should improve tlieir methods regarding the land farmed More intensive methods were required. The Council of adopted a resolution: ''That the present educai tional facilities for persons desirm? to ' engage in rural occupations are hopelessly inadequate, and that it is desirable that investigation of the matter be undertaken by a special commission. Before this motion was put, the council .heard an address by Mr. Peren ( Profes- J ! sor of Agriculture at Victoria College), ( iin which he said other countries were streets ahead of Xew Zealand in agrieul- s rural education.
