CLAIM FOR DAMAGES.
CHARGE AGAINST MOTORIST. SERIOUS ASPECT OE TRIVIAL CASE. (By Telegraph.—Owu Correspondent.) THAMES, this day. "There has been gross perjury on one side or the other; the case was trivial, but I must clear it up," said Mr. Salmon, S.il., at the conclusion of a case against John Crosbie, charged with negligently driving a motor car on May 11. The evidence -showed that two lads were driving a herd of cows from Turua to Coromandel, and they had been all day on the road. About 5.30 p.m. they passed Kopu, where, it was alleged, defendant drove his car at high speed and collided with the cows, breaking the leg uf one animal and injuring another. The car stopped on top of the second animal, and had to be lifted off. This statement, •Crosbie and two companions said, was untrue. They did not even know that a second animal had been injured till yesterday. in cross-examination accused admitted having received a lawyer's letter claiming- damages for two animals belonging to separate owners. Evidence was given that the beast that had one leg broken was black, whereas the car, when seen next day, bad other coloured hair on it as well. The magistrate adjourned the case to enable him to view the car which has been lying in a garage ever since, also to get a veterinary surgeon's report on the other cow's condition.
