POPPY DAY FUNDS.
m APPEALS TO CONTINUE. (By Telegraph.—Press Association.) CHRISTCHURCH, Monday. Poppy Day was under discussion by the RJ?-A. Conference this evening. 'Remits were received from Auckland, Wellington and Otago in regard to a number of recommendations. Both Messrs. R. D. Bell and E. F. AndreAvs spoke against the suggestion that PoppyDay should be heid on or about Armistice Day. The Rev. J. McCrac said poppies and Anzac Day seemed to go together. People liked to buy poppies and wear them'on Anzac Day and if Poppy Day was altered to Armistice Day, the sales of poppies would go down by 50 per cent. Mr. W. E. Leadley said thai Christchurch had a splendid record in regard to the Anzac Day celebrations and the poppy played a prominent part each year. He moved that the custom be not interfered with. It was declared.by Mr. R. B. Jacobs that he could not see any connection betAveen 'Poppy Day and Anzac Day. It seemed to him wrong to benefit financially by appealing to people's [sentiment, and a demoralising thing for i the RJSA. to "parade its 'bones" and then ask for financial assistance. If Poppy Day was to be continued he hoped it Avould be dissociated from Anzac Day. The motion not to interfere with the existing arrangement was carried and it was decided that the local associations determine the specific distribution of the proceeds of Poppy Day, special attention to be devoted to relief of unemployment and to the New Zealand Veterans' Home, Auckland.
