FURTHER IMPRISONMENT.
INCORRIGIBLE YOUNG THIEF. When Albert Foster Smith, a young man, came forward for sentence at the Supreme Court on a charge of liousebreakiug and theft it was stated that he was already serving a sentence of twelve months for theft committed at Rotorua. The present offence concerned the stealing of jewellery and money from the hotise of a woman at Northcote who had befriended him. Mr. Justice Herdman told accused that he could not understand how lie continued to steal after the chances he had received. He had been convicted twelve times since 1922, despite the fact that lie had been granted probation and given every opportunity to lead a respectable, honest life. Smith, who had nothing to say, was sentenced to six months' hard labour, to begin at the termination of the sentence now being served.
