AMRITSAR RISING.
THE USE OF FORCE. A COMMANDANT'S EVIDENCE. (Received 12 noon.) LONDON, May 18. Giving evidence for the plaintiff in the case in which Sir Michael O'Dwyer (formerly Lieutenant-Governor of the Punjab) brought an action against Sir Sankaran Nair, alleging libel, Colonel Johnson (commanding the military forces at Lahore) justified martial Lav under the circumstances of the Amritsar rising and its suppression. Colonel Johnson asserted: "My first objective was to maintain the British Raj at all costs, even if the streets of Lahore ran red with iblood; secondly, please God, I was out to effect that without the shedding of one drop of blood." (A. and N.Z. Cable.)
