THE PRESIDENT'S VETO
FLOUTED BY THE HOUSE. SOLDIERS' BONUS BILL. ' HINT FOR ELECTIONS. (By Cable. —Fress Association.—Copyright.) (Received 10.30 a.m.) NEW YORK, May 18. The House of Representatives, after only a short debate, repassed the Sol- , diers' Bonus Bill, despite the veto of ! Mr. Coolidge. the President. The vote, • 313 against 78, indicated the refusal of;< members to heed the mediators, who l< made strenuous endeavours to placate < representatives, in order to Bpare Mr. j] Cooiidge embarrassment. \ The vote, however, far exceeds the It fo-called two-thirds requirement neces- i 1 sary to override the Presidental veto, i The measure now goes to the Senate, ! which is admittedly more tractable, but < contains sufficient opposition to cause ■ < a lively struggle and a narrow vote. It is significant as showing that Mr. I Coolidge will not necessarily be an ] elected President of the United States, i that his veto of the Soldiers' Bonus Bill .' was defeated by the House of Represen- i tatives. It is a strong indication of ] ■what may happen at the elections.—(A. 1 and N.Z. Cable.) i MR. COOLII>GE INDISPOSED. < 1 NO PTTBIJC BUSINESS. [ (Received 11.30 a.m.) WASHINGTON, May 18. Mr. Coolidge is ill with a cold, and has been ordered to bed. All engagements have been cancelled. General Charles E. Sawyer, M.R.C.. the White House physician, who attended the late Mr. Harding, declined to state whether Mr. Coolidge had fever, ibut minimised the President's indisposition, and is confident of his quick recovery.— (A. and N.Z. Cable.) I
