SHIP'S FIREMAN'S DEATH.
PECULIAR CIRCUMSTANCES. REASON FOR ADJOURNMENT OF INQUEST. When the inquest was held yesterday j on the body of a ship's fireman named: James Maye, which was found floating in the harbour near the Prince's wharf on Thursday, after evidence of identification had been taken the proceedings were adjourned to a date to be fixed by tbe police. Those who had seen the body to identify it stated before the inquest opened that there were some marks on it which looked as if they were the result of bullet wounds. An autopsy was subsequently held, and it is understood that sensational developments may result, and that it is not improbable that an arrest will result. Maye, who was a fireman on the cargo steamer West Katun, which arrived at this port on May 4 from San Francisco, was a native of Ireland, about 128 years of age. He was last seen alive by ona of his mates on Wednesday, May 7, at 10 a.m., near Victoria Park. The vessel is now in Wellington.
