OBITUARY.
9 MR. J. E. SMERDON. A well-known resident of Auckland for over half a century, Mr. John Edward Smerdon, died on May 15 at K.nyon Avenue, Mount Eden. Deceased ! had reached the advanced age of 84 'years. Many years a<ro Mr. Smerd-m carried on a joinery business in the old City Markets. He was a Devonshire !man, and naturally too to the sea. He visited the China and Indian stations* |as well as South Africa, and Australia. i During the Maori War Mr. Sinerdon saw service in the Waikato. Later he was one of the founders of the Masonic Lodge, Beata. He was also for many years Senior Woodward of City of Auckland Court Foresters. Mi. Smerdon'B wife predeceased him. Deceased is survived by the following family: Messrs. Thomas. Edward, and Walter Smerdon, Mesdames R. Davis, Simm and M. Downie, of Ellerslie. TWO OLD THAMESITES. (By Tel-_Taph.—Own Correspondent.) THAMES, this day. The death is announced of Mr. William .Simmonds, a very old milling identity here. Mr. James Monteith McLaren, for twenty years engineer of Thames County Council and a well known Freemason, died last night. He leaves a wife, two son 9 and two daughters.
