DEFENCE NOTES.

The members of the 23rd and 30th | (Kingsland) Senior Cadet Companies i attended a church parade at St. Paul's | Church on Sunday morning last. The Auckland Artillery Band, numbering over 130 instrument-, under Lieutenant Cater. | I headed the parade. The strength of the j I 23rd and 30th companies was three officers I and 169 other ranks, and three officers nnd 125 other ranks respectively. Lieutenants \V. A. Moore and H. A. Blakcy were in I Charge of tbe units.- The total .strer.srth of I the parade was over 330 officers nnd men, which, considering the fact that the parade was purely voluntary, ls particularly meritorious. All units are training hard for the annual boxing competitions. The lads of the Klngslanii companies (23rd and 30th) and the, Avondale company (37th) are showing good f progress and should prove a hard proposi-1 tion. The eliminating bouts for these com-1 panics will be decided during the second j week of July. The Drill Hall this week presents a very unusual appearance. Beds have been placed ! in the hall for the use of visiting naval j men. the arrangements being in the bands o£ i the V.M.C.A. ! The Nelson Senior Cadets were judged , to be the winners of the recent Campbell statuette competition. This company won ] the competition last year. The medals for the boys ; of the company who fired for the Imperial Challenge Shield were presented by Major ■ Finniß. The Ist Battalion (Training College) in charge of Cap-! tain Rae, formed the guard of honour, the i Sacred Heart, Technical College and the St. Stephen's Maori Boys' College battalions; also parading. Music was supplied by the j Auckland Senior Cadet Band and the Tech-1 1 nlcal College Trumpet Band. Major G. P. j o'Shau_hne_sy was in command, with Lieutenant R. S. Judson, Y.C., acting as adjutant. A number of officers from the field and - garrison batteries took- advantage of an invitation to Inspect H.M.s. Hood on Wednesday. Chief interest naturally centred on the vessel's armament. There were also pre- j sent several members of the permanent staff. ; i -Tic King's College BattalioD has been j selected to march with the colours on the King's Birthday Parade oh June 3. The 3rd Battery N.Z.A. (Major C. N. Newnian D.5.0.) and the 4th (Howitzer) Battery, N.Z.A. (Captain W. F. Stilwcll, M C ) will hold special parades on Tuesday, May 27, in preparation for the King's Birthday parade. The 29tl_ Senior Cadet Company (Ponsonby) held their annual social and dance on Tuesday last In Wright's Hall, Newton, to farewell the : members of the unit who will Ehortly be posted into the Territorials, j A special general meeting of the Auckland Military Sports Association has been called for Tuesday next at 8 o'clock. .The business will be in connection with the adoption of the new set of rules. , All cadets In the night companies who were bo*fl in the year 1906 will be medically examined at their respective company headquarters.during the forthcoming week.
