PROGRESSIVE MOUNT EDEN.
REDUCTION IN RATES, LOWEST IN AUCKLAND.
Ratepayers in the three areas of Mt. Eden Borough will welcome the rates struck at a special meeting of the council last evening.
The Mayor (Mr. E. H. Potter) presided, and in moving that the rates for the ensuing year be: No. 1 area (city to Grange Koad) 3/4, No. 2 area (Grange Road to Balmoral Road) 3/4*, and No. 3 area (Balmoral Road to Boundary) 3/6, said that in spite of the fact that Mount Eden had no endowments to relieve the rates, interest and sinking fund on £292,100 loan money expended on water supply, drainage, road construction and swimming bath, and all general expenditure in connection with the borough's activities during the present financial year, are provided in the consolidated rate of 3/5 in the £, which included the sanitation rate, and would be collected in the various water districts. "It is worthy of note," said the Mayor, "that the rates have been struck on the old valuations, with the exception of new buildings, and the rates are the lowest in Auckland. The water charges return no profit, and the consumer is charged only for the water used. There is no additional charge on sanitary conveniences or garden hoses." Mr. Fraser asked if the proposed rates were on a par with last year. The Mayor: In some cases there is a slight reduction. We have to take into consideration the spending of money on secondary roads and that we will shortly be calling for tenders for doing the main roads in concrete. That has to be taken into consideration. The motion was seconded by Mr. Newcombe, and carried. The new rate means that there is a reduction of Id in No. 1 area, and l|d Nq. 2 and 3 areas, for those who take the discount.
