POLICE COURT.
(Before Mr. W. R. McKean, SJSI.) EASTER MONDAY TROUBLES. Following behind a small squad of unkempt "drunks" came Vincent Joseph McGlone, who was charged with having placed himself in Queen Street for the purpose of begging alms. It was stated (hat accused had. arrived here from the South with a shilling in his pocket— just like a pioneer. Then, on the get-rich-quick principle, he started to beg for more, and his capital rose to 3/3. Accused told the magistrate he had asked for money so as to be able to buy a square meal. His Worship thought a shilling quite enough for that purpose, and he told' McGlone that he should not have made himself a nuisance by begging for more. The man. promised, that he would leave town and get- a job in the North. He was sentenced to 24 hours. . HNi-ROVOKED ASSAULT. < Frank James Donnelly (50), a man with a record, was sentenced to a month's imprisonment on each of two charges in respect of obscene language and assault. He went into a public lavatory in Symonds Street last night and struck the aged attendant on the head with his clenched fist, using the language complained of. : It was stated that the assault was unprovoked. The sentences are to be served concurrently. GREY STREET DISTURBANCES. There was an altercation in a Grey Street lodging house last night, as the result of which Richard Lawson Williams made off in quest of a policeman. Returning with the constable, Williams became involved in an argument with his acquaintances, during the course of which he treated the man in blue to a sample of the obscene vernacular. This cost him £2 to-day, and for being drunk he was mulcted in the sum of 10/. Frederick Victor McQuoid (26) and Joseph Peckham (25), who did not appear, each had the amount of his bail (£3) estreated for having been guilty of threatening behaviour in Grey Street. MORE THAN A TICKET PUNCHED. Scene: A tramcar. Enter Inspector J. R. Loney, who makes a request for all tickets. John Michael Nolan (52) a passenger, fails to produce visible proof that he has paid his fare. The inspector asks for his name and address. Nolan refuses, and backs it up A vith violence, the official being assaulted. Act 2: Nolan fined £5, plus expenses 26/, in default | seven days.
