Miss Gertrude Miller, who has been the guest of Mrs. Averill, "Bishopscourt," has returned to Christchurch. Miss Stead, of Hastings, is paying a visit to Auckland,- and is the guest* of Mrs. G. R. Bloomfield, 'The Pines," Epsom. Mr. and Mrs. S. N. Ziman, who have returned to Auckland from Bombay to visit relatives, are staying at Cargen. Dr. A. O. Knight and Mrs. Knight, who have been on a holiday to Rotorua and Te Puke, have returned to Auckland. Mrs. Reeves and-the Misses Reeves, of St. Stephen's Avenue, Parnell, and Miss Alcorn, of Putaruru, have been spending the Easter holiday at Kawau. Miss Elsie Mitchineon, of Ponsonby, left by the Ulirnaroa on an extended trip to Australia. Lady Bell and Miss Bell, of Wellington, are visiting Auckland. ? Mrs. C. H. Laws, of Auckland, who has been visiting relatives in Christcrmrch, has returned home. Mrs. Daly, nee Edith Harrhy, the composer, was in Dunedin last week. The Musical Circle of the Otago Women's Club took the opportunity of welcoming Mrs. Daly at the club on Thursday. Mrs. Moses, of Auckland, has gone to Wellington for the Victoria College jubilee celebrations, and is staying at the Midland .Hotel. Mrs. Moses was Miss Julie Fruhauf. At the invitation of the Hon. Mrs. Tahu Rhodes, Chrietchurch, fully sixty ladies assembled last week to meet Mrs. W. R. Wilson (Auckland), who is Organising Commissioner of the Girl Guides in New Zealand. Miss Laura Tabart, ■who presided, apologised for the absence of, Mrs. Joseph Studholme, who is at present in the North Island. CIVIC LEAGUE. v The usual monthly meeting of the Civic League took place on Wednesday evening in the Business Girls' Club. The president, Miss Basten, : occupied • the chair. The subject of a TJest room was brought up, arid the league- went into, committee while a lengthy resume of the present position was given. Reference was made to the success of the women on school committees, shoiWing that 33 women -were returned, a gain of ten women members. Mrs. Taylor topped the poll in Northcote out of 22 candidates, and Mrs. Michaels topped the score at Devonport by a majority of 145 votes. A member referred to the great'iiumber of 'chifafen- which some'teachers are sup-posed-to teach, and.mentioned one with fifty children in her class, and said this matter should be brought before the public Another member said that very often the younger teachers were penalised. Her daughter had been given a class of 74 children in standard 111., while .elder teachers had smaller classes. Another member said this matter came up at «very meeting of teachers. It was her opinion that the education authorities were making an attempt -to, grapple with the subject." Another case was. mentioned where a 'young teacher was; given the largest class in the school, and it was emphasised.that.it was a matter; which should, be brought before the, public. The Memorial Hall, Cambridge, was the scene of a" most enjoyable gift afternoon, given for Miss, Jean McCullagh, prior to her .marriage. The hall was, most effectively decorated with lovely flowers, the colours predominating being red and yellow,- with autumn tinted leaves Vocal items were contributed by Mrs: G. Jones, 'Mrs, Nolan and Miss Thompson, the accompaniments were played by Miss Mitchell. After the tea had been served, the bride elect opened the parcels, which contained useful and ornamental articles. Mrs. McCullagh was wearing a smart fawn coat and skirt, and hat to tone.
