NEWS IN AUCKLAND.
POSTING THE NOTICES. MEN MEET IN TRADES HALL. The first intimation that Auckland had that a strike had been declared was a receipt of a telegram at half-past eight last evening by Mr. C. Dawson, secretary of the Auckland branch of the A.S.I_S. The wire was sent by the association executive at Wellington, and declared a strike at midnight. The local secretary immediately had strike notices posted at the Auckland station and, also at the railway workshpps, while pickets were dispatched. At least a couple pf hundred men, quite in ignorance that the strike was in full swing, proceeded to the Newmarket shops as usual this morning, but the majority had learned of the development before reaching the workshops. At 8 a.m. the men gathered-on an allotment adjacent to the Newmarket school, and were there informed that the strike had been declared. The news was received with cheer's, and the men in a body proceeded to the Trades Hall, where the total attendance numbered about 800. Quiet and Orderly. There was complete absence of any-, thing tending towards rashness outside the Trades Hall, where hundreds of men gathered at the conclusion of-the meeting. They were a jolly crowd bf welldressed, smart-looking men.; It is Understood that the local executive have made it perfectly clear that the fight must be cleanly f pught, and that any departure from this will be severely dealt with.
