COLLISION IN GORGE.
TWO CARS GO OVER BANK. A collision between two motor cars took place in the Manawatu Gorge at about 3.30 p.m. on Monday, both cars going over the bank. One, containing three people, lodged in some trees twenty feet down. The other car went to the bottom, the driver jumping out before the vehicle went over. In conversation with the drivers after the accident, a reporter learned that the cars, one containing Mr. and Mrs. Turnbull, of Whakatane, and Mrs. Trice, of Hastings, and the other only the driver tried to pass each other while on the narrow portion of the road. The sides of the cars became locked, and both went over the bank. The solo driver was able to 'jump out before the vehicle left the read, to somersault over and over until it reached the side of the river in a damaged condition. The car with three on board lodged in some trees twenty feet down, the passengers remaining in their seats, and subsequently reaching t.ie road again, unhurt. Both parties went on to Palmerston North, leaving the cars where they fell.
