MlliUire Is looking very well, and he ' may be handy in hurdle races later in the ' season. I Queen March is said to have found the ! going at Wellington on the first day too nard for her. | Mr. W. H. Ballinger. of Wellington, won ' three races on the nrst day of the Foxton meeting with Waetea. Wheel, and Stream. 1 According to reports. Glimpse ran badly at Wellington on Thursday, and Is not in the same class as her stable companion, Merit. Puketoi, which downed Glimpse at Tau- ! herenikau. has had a change of trainers. and is now in charge of F. Carmont at 1 Foxton. Cold Steel set a merry pace in the early stages of the Wellington Cup. and it was not till the straight was reached that he was settled. Orchid showed a bit or pace at Trentham on Thursday, but six furlongs was too far for him, and he finished fifth in the 1 Camp Handicap. | Kinscm is stated to have raced well on the nrst day at Wellington, and, as she is very nt, a race may be won by this mare In the not far distant future. 1 Advent, which beat Bonn}' Rill by a ! nose in the hack hurdles on the first day at Foxton. was the outsider of the field, and carried only one-sixth of the amount . invested on Bonny Rill, the favourite. I Prince Ferouz has been running well this ! season, ror out or nineteen starts he has won three events and been placed on eleven other occasions. He was bred by Mr. W. I G. Stead, and is byi Keramorz—Cheloma. j Bugle Note made) amends for his defeat I m the Ruapehu Handicap by annexing the Camp Handicap at Wellington on Thursday. 1 He was eighth ravourite on the Ilrst day, j but was nrst In public fancy when he won. I Mangawhero, which scored in the Her- I rington Welter at Foxton, is by Marble Arch—Miss Patience, and therefore a full brother to Lady Patience, which has been winning ln the North Auckland district j recently. j Highland ran rourth tn the Wellington Racing Club Handicap, and evidently he is getting back to his spring rorm. He is a good horse when properly right, and an 1 important handicap should go bis way! before long. j W_ue Comet was given a good chance of winning the Douro Cup at Wellington | by Aucklanders, especially after finishing > third in the Apprentices' Plate, but apparently he was never prominent at any stage. Suggestion did not get the best or passages in the Anniversary Handicap at Wellington, but, says the " Dominion.'' I Oliver was patient, and. seizing »n opening 100 yards from home, won nicely. Royal Divorce, which looked the winner up to this period, faded out. and Prince Ferouz beat him for second place. Uleaborg, which had started ten times this season for two seconds, followed up Guncase's win by annexing the President's Handicap at Gore. This was the Egypt gelding's nrst success since he was purchased by Mr. J. P. Murphy, although he had returned a second dividend on occasions. Rachel, wnich ran second to Nigger Minstrel in the Fizberbert Handicap at Trentham on Tuesday. is owned by Mr. J. J. Corrv. of Blenheim. She is by Kilbroney rrom Rebekab, which was raced by Mr. COrry some seasons back. Rebekab was a particularly smart sprinter, and Rachel seems to have Inherited some or this .uallty Trom her dam. Penelephon, which won the Douro Cup at Wellington, is a three-year-old Ally by Klng Mark—Hoy and therefore full sister to Anomaly and King's Folly. She only went" to the post once as a two-year-old, and ran unplaced. It was not till tbe last Hawke's Bay Summer Meeting that she saluted the judge, and she carried off two sprint events at the meeting. Mr. P. F. Wall intended that his pair. Import and Dissertation, should make the trip to Trentham at the time that he nominated them ror several events in connection with the Summer Meeting or tbe Wellington Racing Club, but their public dlsplavs since they were nominated were not at all satis ractory. and the brace are ln their boxes at Woodville. It was stated in a Wellington paper on Thursday that unless more rain fell Gloaming would be an unlikely starter in the Waterloo Stakes to-day. R. J. Mason does not regard htm as at bis best yet. and he Is anxious not to take any chances with the champion. Gloaming's name was missing from the list or acceptors ror the event, and therefore It may be taken that the ground was too hard ror him. Mr. G. D. Greenwood has another good one in Parody in this race. Tbe conditions or tbe High Weight Handicaps at the Wellington Cup meeting include a clause that the horses have to be ridden by jockeys who have at time Or entry completed three times a steeplechase or hurdle race within two years. Many wondered how H. Gray happened to be on CarawocK, which won the Trentham High Weight llEndicap. but it is stated by a Southern exchange be was able to show tbe stewards he bad ridden in England over hurdles the requisite number or times. He sustained a broken collar bone, and then retired from the business. Gold Light, the half-sister to Razzle Dazzle, arter mushing second to Loughrea in the Wellington Cup, won the Racing Club Handicap, eleven furlongs, on the second day. dereating a good field in •"> 18 3-5, which establishes a new record for the distance in New Zealand. Previously, according to the Turf Register, the record was held conjointly by Eieus and insurrection, which ran the distance in 2.19 on tne same course. The Australasian record is 2.17 J. and was made by a horse called Tom McCarthy, at Brisbane. Prior to the start of the Camp Handicap botn Bugle Note and KUris changed hands, says " Glencoe." The former wot), and the later filled second place. Mr. A. McDonald sold the winner to Mr. w. Stone, Of invercargill, best Known as tne owner or Silver Peak, but delivery is not to be riven until arter the meeting, so the Masterton sportsman gets the stake. KUris raced in the colours Of her trainer, B. Burgee It Is reported that Mr. W. R. KeDiball contemplates selling the whole or his big team, and be is anxious to start off with a fresh one. maootoa, which won the Apprentices' Plate at Wellington on Tuesday, is a mare owned by Mr. G. Johnston, or Matamata, wh_ previously raced Ring Lupin Iha- , DOtoa raced unsuccessfully in the Auckland rr_v_.ee some two years back, and was • Srwwarfls used as a child's school pony. • tm re being placed under E. W. Watson's charge at Pateierson. the chestnut h--won • a number of races, and is now out or the LJ_da« Stable mates or Ihapotoa are two otheV'Matamata-owned gallopers. Passionie's and Lady Passenger, which run in the name of Mr. W. C. Vincent. Ihapotoa has raced weU this season.

Carawock is under orders to race over steeplechase courses on the country circuit in Auckland, says tbe " Dominion." If tie maintains bis improvement ms owner should have no cause to regret making the trip. Mr. L. C. Hazle'.r? Galway and Mr. \V. T. Hazlett's Francaise each won races at the Gore meeting on Tuesday. The former owns Loughrea and the latter Gold Lignt. which ran first and second in tbe Wellington Cup. Lapidary was a strong tip for the Stratford meeting, but he failed to win. However, ridden by H. Gray on Wednesday, he scored in the Moutiti Handicap at Foxton, after running second to Wheel on the Urst day. The injury received by Listening" Post win mean about a three weeks' rest I'Or him. and consequently he will not be ready to race again until the later autumn meetings. Mr. Russell will be represented at v\"ing_tui next month with Lau_tilng Eyes only. The imported Maria of Hereford, according to southern reports, appeared a trifle lame in the birdcage prior to the Apprentices' Plate at Trenthsm on Tuesday, hut went freely tn ncr preliminary. However, she had every chance, but was unable to see It out. South Islanders were very confident that Enare would win tbe High Weight on Thursday at Trentham. and they were right, for the chestnut went to the front when be was asked to, and was not troubled to win. He did not look ready, so should improve. In selling Advent, which scored at Foxton, for 150 guineas Mr. T. M. Symes did not have anything the worst or the argument after all. though the Advance mare won immediately after (writes "Moturoa"). A contlngencv of £100 out of winnings ; brought the price up to ovef £-50, which was the mare's full value. Tbe -work that Last Crust had been I doing at Trentham Indicated that he was being got ready for the Douro Cup. says an exchange. He was always wen forward, ; and half-way up the straight looked like i being in a dividend, but Zero Hour Unished ! fast enough to beat, him by about half a length for second money. Diamond Ring, owned by Mr. H. M. Campbell, ran a good rare in the Anniversary Handicap, but evidently the ground was too hard for her. The rain over, night apparently softened the track a little, and this was in her favour, for she piloted the field for well over a mile in the W.R.C. Handicap, on the second day. with the going a little more to her llktng she should soon show up more prominently at the end. Gatllard was handicapped to give Trigger Minstrel ?lb in the Fttzherbert Handicap at Wellington on Tuesday, but the former ■was scratched. He was brought out on the second day, and giving away from sib to 2st 71b. he won in 50 4-ss. which is a pretty fair performance. He recently annexed the Nursery Handicap at Manawatu and the Juvenile Handicap at Marton. The pace and the weight apparently beat Rosedav in the Wellington Cup, but his effort in carrying 0.7 into third place was a brilliant one. He occupied a similar position with 9.9 behind Gold Light and Enthusiasm on Thursday in the Wellington Racing Club Handicap, and there is no doubt that this, on the top of his Auckland performances, stamp bun as one or the best weight carriers that has been seen for some time. Santonin, wntch beat Glentruin in the Metropolitan Handicap at Wellington on Thursday, is a five-year-Old gelding by San Fran—Dolly Fisher. He only started once as a three-year-old, when he ran unplaced at We Feildtng meeting. Last season he faced the barrier on twenty-one occasions, winning six events. Including two minor ones at Wellington. This was his first win this season, but be has been placed on several occasions. He was in receipt of 3st -lib from Glentruin, but as the race was run in 1.10 2-5 he demonstrated that be has more than ordlnary pace. His supporters drew upwards of a score as the result of his victor}-. ,
