LIGHT WEIGHT SCALES.
HAMILTON FIRM FINED. i 1 (By Telegraph. —Own Correspondent.) HAMILTON, this day. Two business men of Frankton, W. S. Menziea and 11. Gollop, trading as Mcnzies and Gollop, auctioneers, pleaded guilty before Mr. Young, S.M., to-'diy .to the charge of having used li?ht weight scales. According- to Mr. F. Wil- . son (inspector of weights and measures) the scales had been previously used by . a certain firm of coal merchants and had ■ been sent to the Frankton Auction Mart for sale. On December 14 a man called i at the Frankton police station and said [ his wife had bought a hair, from Menzies [ and Gollop as weighing 161b, whereas it; weight was only The inspector . tested the scales, and found them l£lb ! against the customer. Witness could ■ not account for the additional lib short- . age. The inspector said the scales were not delicate enough for weighing articles that cost ljd an ounce. •Mγ- King, for defendants, said they were * quite innocent in the matter, and there * was absolutely no intention to defraud. c Hams were known to shrink 3lb in one } week. Each defendant was fined £3 * and costs.
