NEWSPAPER SPECULATIONS. WHAT FRANCE DESIRES. » (Received 12..",n p.m.-, PARIS, January 3. The apprehensions of the British and Italian Press that the Franco-Czech Treaty will ultimately divide Europe into two armed camps has evoked replies from the French Press. The "Journal" envisages as a result of the treaty anew Europe based on Franco-Belgian and Little Entente alliances and improved relations with Poland and the Baltic States. It says the coming conference of the Belgrade and Esthonian-Latvian Customs union are steps in the same direction. The "Echo" says France's aim is to organise- the Continent airaiiist any attempt at hegemony. This will be achieved if the small States in the East and Central Europe consolidate permanently outside Germanism.— (A. and N.Z. Cable.)
