The "Times" Vienna correspondent says the severest winter for fifty years is being experienced in Austria, and throughout the whole of Southern and Central Europe. Snowfalls, which began before, Christmas, continue occasionally, accompanied by most violent blizzards, and the bitterest cold. In the country districts tlic snow drifted fathoms deep, and villages in mountain valleys were snowed in, only the chimneys being visible. Railway traffic in Austria is disorganised. Traffic on some lines is completely suspended, and thousands of trucks are snow-bound
Vienna has already spent ten thousand .sterling in keeping the streets clear. There have been numerous avalanche fatalities. A ski party of seven was buried and only two saved. Other parties are missing. Western Bohemia reports snow fifteen fuet deep. Wild birds and animals are dying in great numbers. —("Times.")
