"What is to be done by the Slate with youthful immigrants who. within two months of their arrival in New Zealand, are deemed to be uncontrollable: llus was a question raised by the appearance of a seventcen-vear-old <rirl named Florence Ruby Smith at the Police Court on a charge "of being an idle and disorderly person, having insufficient visible means ot support. It was stated that accused had been nominated as an immigrant by a sister living at Kaikoura. On a liner coming her conduct did not commend her as the best type of immigrant. Later on Smith's sister at Kaikoura informed the police that she could do no more for the girl, as she was beyond control, and needed reformation. • In Christchurcli the girl wandered about the Streets Until late at night on December 2:S. and then informed a policeman that she had no home. Throughout the short hearing Smith kept her head bowed, and answered questions in whispers. She agreed to go to St. Anne's Home for Girls. She was convicted, and ordered to come up for sentence within twelve months it' called upon. * ______■
