ROUND-UP OF CRIMINALS.
CHECKING THE CRIME WAVE. XEW YORK, November 23. New York's under-world was scoured clean last night, when thousands of police rounded up every man and woman with a criminal record In an effort to check the crime-wave which has been sweeping the city. Every known den or "hang-out" was visited, and criminals picked up without a warrant and ordered to establish their innocence of recent wrong-doing, failing which they were advised to get out of the city. Civilian police reserves numbering ."5000 were also invited to volunteer for patrol duty or lend their motor cars for the purpose of chasing law-breakers. Even traffic policemen were called upon to help, and ordered to patrol their home districts when relieved from their regular duties. As a result of the extraordinarypolice activity there is now a noticeable reduction in the number of daily robberies and shootings, and officials express satisfaction with the progress of cleaning up the city.
