The mother of Franz Mum. aged 21, a handsome Bavarian peasant, implored him to improve the family's fortune by marrying a rich widow, Pauline Berndt, aged 63, tbe owner of a. large farm, who was infatuated with Franz. The latter reluctantly yielded and went to the church on the wedding day. When he saw the ugly widow hobbling up the aisle he was overcome by revulsion He.went mad, drew a dagger, and cut off his mother's nose. The bride fled.—(A. and N.Z.)
