Another round of 'he pennant matches came off last Saturday afternoon n Ane weather, in spite of the threatening look pf the eky ' >fost of the results appear .in nuothe; column, and the > usua analysis will be published in the spirts edition.on S atur daj In the meantime it may be sad that Devonport and Rocky Nook which.tied for first place in the first, round, with 80 per cent of wins, have become s epa rat «V D "„T porf met disaster at the hands "* Carlton, while Rocky Nook have a bye. « nd J O retain first place. Epsom secured wins out of 12 against Carlton, but this was not enough to retain the fine position gained in the first round, and the club has fallen from "'The decision 6 of the English Lawn Tennis Association to arrange the championship draw in such a way as to create interest in the finals must be regarded as further support to a scheme suggested in this column That august body Is so conservative that this obvious reform must have been most difficult to bring about, and we have people in the bowling world who arc similarly conservative. At the Dominion tournament last January, they thought it was quite all right to "seed" the draw so that Carlton should not have to meet Carlton in the section play, but apparently they thought It would be quite all wrong to carry this principle to its logical length, and prevent the misfortune of Wellington meeting Kelburn, and Christchurch meeting Sumner. In fact it was shown that it would have been quite easy to arrange a draw with all the elc- | ments of luck, and still avoid the possibility of near neighbours coming all the way to Auckland to play against each other. It will be interesting to see .if the Chrlstcbnrch executive follows tbe admirable example of the English Lawn Tennis Association, and arrange the draw in such a way as will create the maximum amount of Interest to both visitors and local competitors. THE DENISON SCARF PIN%. Congratulations to Epsom ! They have performed the impossible, or what people said was impossible: they have taken away the Dcnison scarf pins from Ponsonby, a fine match resulting as follows:—C. Lamb. E. J. Wilkinson. H. de Lfluney. W. Fonbister (challengers) 21. v. I. Clarke. A. N. Snedden. J. Veale I substitute for M. Walker), J. F. Ilosking (holders) 17.. Two thoughts immediately spring from the perusal of this result. On one side there will be "I told you so. a team with a genuine lead and No. 2 will always beat four skips." But this Is a very debatable point, and so long as a man can draw the shot it ought not to make any difference whether he usually plays lead or skip. On the other side will be the inevitable comment that Epsom were lucky to meet Ponsonbv when the triple champion of New Zealand* happened to be away. This may or may not be. We can never tell what might have happened under different circumstances. All that we know definitely is that the new player did not by any means put in the worst game of the eight, and that is saying a good deal when two such line teams' took part. The game started under very pleasant conditions. Before the skips walked out. Mr. Ilosking drew attention to the fact that the donor of the pins. Sir. Walter Denison, was on the green, and referred in very graceful terms to the fine tournament that he had brought into being, and to the great interest that it had created. He then called for cheers for Mr. Denison, which were very heartily given by the competitors, and also by the other members of the club who were present. Mr. Denison gratefully acknowledged the compliment, and expressed his pleasure that the weekly competition had produced the desired effect. In fact it had more than come up to his expectations. Kpsom picked the green at once, finding it vcrv similar to what they had been accustomed to. They notched 10 on the first four heads, aud maiutained the lead throughout. II was really the 20th head which settled Ponsonby. They had reduced the lead to two. but were a few down on the head, when Veale put in a tine drive, picked up the jack, and left it almost on tbe boundary. Ills own bowl went dead, and he had the additional mortification of seeing Epsom lie three. Foublster drew a fourth, both of Hosking's bowls going just a shade too wide, and finishing outside the cotton. This left Epsom 6 up. with one head to go. but Ponsonby were not liuished yet. Veale and Hosking made three dead heads between them, in tbe hope of pulling off the 6. which would be equal to a win for tbe holders, but at the fourth attempt the dead head did not come off. The jack went into the ditch, leaving Ponsonby 3 or 4. Foubister cautiously kept out of the dltcb. and contented himself with second shot, and although Hosking beat it and scored two, It still left him four down in the match. So the pins are paying their first visit lo Epsom. Most of the competitors this week are taking part in the Ponsonby tournament on Wednesday, bo they have mutually agreed to play to-morrow instead. The challenging team Is from the Auckland Club, and will consist of P. J. Scautlebury. Hardie Neil, A. D. Cray and 11. Ilemus. Anyone with an hour to spare might do worse than look in I at Epsom green to-morrow. | Next week the match os to be abandoned altogether, as the Christmas tournament I starts on the day it. would ordinarily take place, and it is also to be abandoned for the I following week, to enable everyone to participate in some of the New Year tournaments. On January 9 a team from West End. in charge of W. A. Wynyard, will play the winners of to-morrow's match. The defeat of the so-called "unbeatable"' team at Ponsonby is only another reminder ol the uncertainty of bowls. Similar things arc happening on other greens in the championships now being run off. In one club a beginner has already beaten two previous champions in the first two rounds while in another a live times champion has been poshed out altogether, defeated by two players who are never put anywhere but lead or |wu.
