REBELLION IN MEXICO.
DEFEAT OF INSURGENTS. REBEL CAPTAIN BECOMES LOYAL. DESERTER TAKES THE CASH. (By Cable.—Pres« Association.—Copyright.) (Received 10.30 a.m.) VANCOUVER, December 14. It is reported from Juarez that in the first encounter between the rebels and the troops of General Alvero Obregon, the President, the rebels under the leader Estrada were defeated. Estrada's captain (presumably his pereonal aide) deserted, taking 160 men and 125,000 pesos in cash, immediately joining Obregon's army.— (A. and N.Z.)
It was supposed that under the clever, progressive, and honourable Obregon. J Mexico might be without a revolution I for Rome year*. Obregon appeared to believe more in progress than fighting, and Mexico has been very busy during the three years of Oregon's Presidency. He is a man of great courage, and took charge after the assassination of Carranza. At present every kind of business is sufferins from 'he rebellion, tlie first act of which was the capture of Jalapa (Vera Cruz State) and the death lof 300 people. Railway communication with the United States has been cut by the destruction of the railway on the Mexican side of the Texas border. Tt is remotely possible that events in Latin Kurope—the military eoun in Spain, the Fascist movement in Italy, and particularly the hope for an entente with South American Latins exDressed by the of Spain -while in Rome, may have led those peculiarly volatile anrl vivid people, the Mexicans, to wave their automatics once again. There is no doubt revolution is their one snlenHid pastime, superior even to bull-fighting.
