A BUSY WATERFRONT.
SHORTAGE OF LABOUR. The unusually large amount of shipping in the port at the present moment has naturally made a big demand upon labour on the waterfront, and inquiries made of stevedores this morning elicited the information that, rarely if ever was there such a shortage of labour offering. "All the years I have been on the ■wharves," said one stevedore, "I don't remember an occasion except the present when there were three or more ships in the stream waiting berthing accommodation. It is most unusual, but it is nevertheless opportune, and the watersiders will have a satisfactory Christmas." Asked how long the port would be so busy the answer received was that one week would relieve the demand for so much labour, and then maybe there would be a general slackness during the holidays. Tn ' the meantime every moment was being worked, and calls made at the watersiders' rooms brought forth little, response, as the men were all engaged.
