NOTORIOUS CRIMINALS SWEET HE AHA' A woman's devotion to a ne'er-do-well has been shown by Berthc. Moulon, known as Pepe. When Mourcy, who had been wounded by several ballets in his revolver fight with detectives, wss about to be taken to the hospital, Pepe implored to be allowed to kiss him. Since his arrest she has gone to her native village to obtain the papers in order to marry him. Pepe refused to betray her lover. She ' was promised half of the 20,000 dollars re- | ward by Mr. Shattnck, the Xew York ; millionaire, if she would reveal his hiding | place, bot dec-lined. A police Inspector tried to persuade her that it would be sheer folly to be married to Mourey. Pepe replied: "Xever mind, I shall at least be able to kiws him once again . after tbe mayor has married us. I love him so much that I cannot live without him." Pepe has related how, after ransacking the home of Mr. nnd Mrs. Shattnck in Xew Tork, Mourey unloaded the revolvers of his accomplices, leaving his own weapon charged. When binding his employers the handkerchief which covered the lower part of hi* face dropped, and the terrified Mrs. S'battuck, recognising Mourey, exclaimed, '"Lor, it's onr niaitre d'hotel." "Well," concluded Pepe, full of admiration, "he eonld have killed Mrs. Shattuck at that very moment.
