OTAHUHU SEWAGE.

(To the Editor.) i iSir, — May J crave a little space in i your columns to support the impressions of "-Mud Lark." In contaminating the Tamaki River we are not only I driving local people away from the beaches, but what of the thousand? of picnickers at Buckland'g Beach, besides the residents there? Is it fair to them? .Why not t'.jp Manukan. the immense amount of sewage at present discharged from the works at Westfield, of whifh there are six, is being allowed to lodge on a shallow sheet of water where no i-urrent exists until the tide has fallen towards Onehunga, by which time the "lavender flats" are exposed. The prevailing winds are a contributing force in preventing its escape into deep water. It is only vested interests on the one hand, and an apathetic public on the other, that has permitted this to exist so long. -Still it cannot go on indefinitely. A sewer must be carried out to deep water, cay to or beyond the Mangere Bridge, where there is a decided scour that would carry the sewage right out to the head*. Some may say, "What of the Onehunga people t" 1 contend that if this were done it would at once dispense 'with the annoyance of this tilth lodging in all the little inlets on the upper reaches of this suburb, menacing the health of all and sundry. Then the Otahuhu Borough could make use of this sewer also, and contribute its share towards expenditure. Where drainage must be got rid of, is it not the wiser plan to choose the greater body of water to carry it off, aDd where there are not innumerable creeks and tributaries to check its egress? —I am etc., ARTHUR CUHMINGS. Middlemore.
