Stork, Hipo, and Take Take, who arc at present in Auckland, have been nominated Tor the Taranakl Christmas Meeting. I Patukl was scratched Tor all engagements at the A.R.C. meeting at 4.7 p.m. yesterday. Tactician and Peter Amans wern probably lert in the acceptances Tor the Day of Plenty Meeting- in error. Stork. Manson's Intention to ride at the Taranakl Meeting- at Christmas-time, and he has already been eng-ag-ed to ride Muria and Lady Lois. A. J. McFlinn, who was riding at Woodvilio, lert after the fourth rare on the second day In order to be present at Tauranpa to-day, whero he had engagements to fuini. Cox Informed a Southern writer at Feilding that he may be at Awapuni with italg-ina, Mark Time, arid a two-year-old. Quest. It Is stated, did not ret too good a passag-e in the straight when he finished Third to Counter Attack and Cleasanta at Woodviiie on Wednesday. On the second day he won the (Jorge Handicap, one mile and 170 yards. Oazeworthy. when In form. Is a fine sprinter, and she won the Oete Handicap at Woodviiic on Wednesday In wood style. Always handy to Sollform and Civility, she was let go hair-way down the straig-ht. and scored nicely by half-a-length. After his pood showing at Woodviiie on the opening day. when he ran second to Hall Mark. It came as some surprise to local follower or the turr to hear that Royal hivorce had returned such a remunerative dividend when he won on Thursday. 11. Hastcdt, who was associated with C. Colrman's stable for some considerable time, lias made application ror a trainer's license. He has three boxes at Ellerslie, and is working- Bute Sound under the guidance of his owner. The Knsrllsh-brcd (Illy Merit, by Diadunienos—Lady Marca, 4yrs., owned by Mr. V. Hiddlford. has a good reputation for I rack work at Trentham. She was among: the. acceptors for the Telegraph Handicap at Wondville on Thursday, but apparently i aid not start. Flor do Nave. Muria, Daddy's Girl. White Ranger, St. Waipa, Knig-hton, Princess Hell, Jolly Cay, ,Bute Sound, Dominant Star Love. Plton, Praiseworthy. Kuhlo. EHIe. Lady Lois, and Estlionla are Auckland Horses entered ror the Taranaki Christmas Meeting , . crown Star, who won the Woodviiie Handicap, is a four-year-old colt by Crown Imperial—Tattle. and is owned by Sir Geo. Hunter. Ite led for the greater portion of the distance, and won by a head from Scion. it Is stated by a Southern writer ihat In another stride Scion would nave Ijcaten htm. J. O\Sliea was in good form at Woodviiie, steering Cairo and Quest to victory, while he was unlucky to be beaten on Royal Divorce on the first day. O'Shea is a fine horseman, and it is surprising that there is not a rush on his services for the A.R.C. Meeting, for he is worth; a whole lot to any mount. It is interesting- to note that Maria or Hererord. an English importation, owned by Mr. J. nieeson, and trained by J. T. .lamleson, nnished a creditable third to Hall Mark and Royal Divorce at Woodviiie . on Wednesday. This is the first time the Illly has sported silk in New Zealand, but she Is apparently useful. Maria of Hereford is engaged at Auckland. The following nominations have been received for the Manawatu Cup, one mile and a hair:—Helen Rurus, Kahfkatea. Kllgour, Kllbird. Printemps, Admiral Codrlngton. Cold Steel, Deucalion. Mark Time, Marqueteur. Bonnetter. Trespass. Mountain Crag. Little River, Sunny Loch. Ngata, Many Kittle, Pilliewlnkie, Mcrrlmas, Scotch. Mixlure, Beloved, Megan. The Egmont Racing Club decided at a meeting last week to include in the programme of its February meeting a race called the Nolan Cup. commemorating trie, name or the late president. Sir Robert Nolan. The intention or Lady Nolan to give a cup to the owner of the winning horse, in this race was conveyed to the meeting-, and a vote or thanks was accorded her for the donation. Tanadees. a two-year-old by Hoseworthy—Burletta. broke his maiden status at Woodviiie when he won the Nursery Handicap. When raced at Wellington earlier In the season Tanadees gave promise or boing a useful sort. He was third to InTcrno on the ilrst day at Trentbam. and second to Motley on the concluding day. He. still remains in the Great Northern Foal Stakes. Buckwheat died recently in Australia. He had been ailing for a few months, and his death was not altogether unexpected. On the English Turf Buckwheat was a good performer, and won over £4000 in stalies. He would possibly have considerably increased that amount if he bad been able to run In the classic events, but owing to the death or his part-owner his nomination was invalid, says an Australian writer. At the end of bis racingcareer he was sold to Major Eustjce I.oder and Captain Green for 7000gs. and although only at the stud in England Tor a row seasons, was a success, siring a number or grind performers, who won good races. In Australia Buckwheat was not an outstanding success at the Mud, dcsplio the fact that he was mated with some rashlonably-hred matrons. He certainly sired a Tew good gallopers, includihg Vodka. All Wheat, Corncake, and liuckra. He was the sire or Wlieatfteld that raced in Mr. E. Riddiford'a colours. Mr. E. J. Watt generally manages to have <i good horse carrying his colours, and in the two-year-old, Kidlaw, he has a youngster that is quite out of the ordinary. Kidlaw, who is by Wolawa-Culprit, won the Canonbury Stakes at the A.J.C. spring meeting in good style, beating a very big iield that included a number of smart youngsters, and although on November 24 he did not have a very rood lot in opposition in the Ilrst division or the Nursery Handicap, he carried 9.2 and won again in very One style. He was always near the front, and, although Pike steadied him before the turn and gave him a chance to get properly balanced, he shot hfm to the rront below thee distance and he had little difficulty in winning running away. For his canonbury Stakes win he incurs a I nib penalty in the pecember Stakes, but l» such a good galloper, says "Cardigan." that 1 am doubtful whether that will put him entirely out or court. Youngsters, as a rule, carry weight well, and Kidlaw is a fine cut of a gelding, showing a lot of quality and substance, with a particularly solid barrel.

The Taranaki Jockey Club has received about ico more nominations ror the approaching Christmas Meeting than ror the corresponding meeting last year. B. Rosen has been definitely engaged to ride Boomerday at the A.R.C. Meeting. At time or writing Rosen had not been secured for any of the Railway Handicap candidates. Royal Divorce was entitled to a 7lb allowance in the Trial Plate at AVoodvilie on Wednesday, owing to being English bred, but only claimed 51b. Cool Stimulants has had a slight let-up since racing at the Takapuna Meeting, and will probably be given serious tasks next week. Though Te Kara has 6.12 In the Auckland Cup it is more than probable that H. Goldnnch will be round In the saddle. Goldfinch goes to scale at about 7.9. S. Walls was offered the mount on Carowock In hurdle events at the A.R.C. Summer Meeting, but had lo decline, as he had previously been engaged to ride Pittsworth. T. Qulnlivan's team, Royal Divorce. Scion. Ga-eworthy. and Quest, which he is bringing to Auckland, raced most consistently at Woodviile, and on the rorm displayed tbey should make some or the events Interesting here at Christinas-Mnic. With E. Ra» in the saddle. Tressor was given a schooling task over hurdles at Ellerslie on Thursday. He railed to negotiate the third obstacle satisfactorily. but afterwards cleared another hurdle well. It Is stated that Enthusiasm is getting a special preparation ror the Manawatu Cup. ir this proves correct there Is a good chance or the Tlllcy stable repeating the perrormances registered In 1920 and 1021, in which years the stable supplied the winners or this race with the aid of Client and Rude respectively. The second registered by Scion In the Woodviile Handicap on Wednesday will probably cause the New Zealand and Auckland Cup winner of last season to be taken into consideration for the Auckland ! Cup on Boxing- Day. His most recent performance shows that he Is not below rorm, and Is a proved stayer. Mangawhero, who won the Gothard Memorial Handicap, the principal handicap at Woodviile last Thursday, is the Marble Arch—Miss Patience gelding which returned a big dividend when he scored in a minor event at Avondale a few seasons back. He is now trained In the Taranakl district, and his success on Thursday is the most important scored by him to date. Cairo, by Egypt—Beldame, is a wellbred hack, and he seems to be in good form just now. He won the K'owhai Handicap at Feilding recently, and on AA"ednesdav scored tn the Flying Hack Handicap at Woodviile. He was bred by Mr. T. H. Lowry, but Is now raced by Mr. C. L. Ferguson, of Gisborne. BAY OF ISLANDS CLUB. The Bay or Islands Racing Club will hold their annual meeting on the Kawa- ■ kawa course on Saturday, January 19. | The track, which has been receiving a special preparation, should be in excellent order by the date stated. The new grandstand, booths, and necessary bulldI ings are all finished with a promise that i public, requirements will be rully met. For the principal event, the Kawakawa Cup, a handsome cup. value rorty guineas, has been presented by Messrs F. Andrew-s, J. Dykes, J. F. AVall, and C. H. Puttick, This is in addition to the stakes. Nominations for all events close with the secretary, Kawakawa, and with Mr. C. F. Mark, Auckland, on Thursday, December 20. AUCKLAND RACING CLUB. On Friday next, up to 5 p.m., Mr. W. S. CHRISTCHURCH, this day. The dry spell continues, and trainers are rather righting shy of the grass tracks, the plough being in general use. Yesterday's work was expected to be interesting, but the contrary was the case. Although Pilliewlnkie has been scratched for the Auckland Cup. he. wtth his stable mates Deucallor. and Many Kittle, were galloped the reverse way yesterday morning. The scratching or Pilliewlnkie ror the Auckland Cup was due to R. W. King being dissatisfied with his weight. The AVlnkle gelding, also Many Kittle and Deucalion, have been nominated ror the Manawatu meeting, and a final decision as to their holiday programme will be made In a day or two. A trip to Auckland is still a possibility. Many Kittle still claims an engagement in the Auckland Cup. Others to gallop the reverse way were Parody and Goldtown. Routine work was done by Tinihanga and Murlhaupo. a rair five rurlongs by AVlnning Hit and AVIld Hind a good workout over six furlongs, and Palestrina and Wink did slightly better over the same distance. Ballymena. Barn Owl. and A'iewpoint. each alone, did steady paring. Glentruln is a very unlikely visitor to Auckland, and it is reported that she will 'be reserved for weight-ror-age races in the future. Her next appearance win probably be at the Wellington Cup Meeting. The Lake County Jockey Club lias abandoned its two-day meeting for this season. The Dunedin District Committee is anxious that the permtt should be retained In its own district, and has recommended that it be given to the Riverton nacing Club, which already conducts two days' racing very successfully at Easter. Soiferlte surprised the track watchers yesterday morning by defeating Tlie Reaver in a smartly run five rurlongs. I Solferile was quite an unknown quantity until the recent Timaru meeting, where he I won the Maiden Race. I The AVingatui trainer S. G. Avare visited I Rlcrarton this week, and returned home again on AVcdnesday with the Winkle —Carinanta three-year-old Winkle, whom he will train ror his new owner, Mr. 3. Black. I Prompter, by Bontform—Leading Lady. ! went south on the same train, and will go into F. Shaw's stable at Wingatui, to be trained for Mr. H. Akcr. Bon Spec which has been spelling since the South Canterbury Meeting, will be taken In hand again about the end of next week. ir he goes on well In his work It is probable lie will be raced on the Rat at some of the holiday meetings on the West Coast. The two-year-old filly by Martian rrom Equitas (dam of Oratress and Murlhaupo) has been in F. D. Jones' stable at Riccarton since she was a yearling, but she Is to be returned to her owner. Mr. S. J. Gibbons, when Jones goes north Tor the Auckland Racing Club's Meeting this month. The ( lllly has an enlarged joint, and It seems doubtful If she will stand the work nccesI sary to get her ready for racing. I Mr. J. Grigg's two-year-old Setting Sun, by Gay Lad—Snapshot, was gelded re- | cently, and be has now rejoined R. Alcx- | antler's team. He is a very big youngster. I and is being given plenty or time to mature before he is set any serious tasks on the track. I J. McCombe has nominated Sunny Loch. Geranial. and The Cheat for the Manawatu Racing Club's Summer Meeting. At the sale of Mr. .1. Grigg's yearlings I last month, the Gay Lad—Love a Duck colt, half-brother to L'Amour. was knocked down to Mr. F. P. Clarldgc ror 2.0 guineas iHe was, however, purchased on beliair or Mr. 0. H. Grigg. Since then Ihe youngster has been gelded, and later in the season R. Alexander win break lilm in and get him ready to race.
