Sir John Bice was a*Cornishman, who went to Australia in 1864, settling in Port Augusta, where ho kept an agricultural implement shop. He had been 'Minister controlling the Northern Territory before South Australia handed it orer to the Commonwealth. He was Commissioner of Works, and for imuiv years Chief Secretary. MRS. J. C. MORRIK. A very old resident of Auckland. Mrs. Louisa P. Motrin, died at Whangarei this week, aged 78 years. She was the widow of the late Mr. J. C. Morrin. who, with bin brother Mr. William Morrin, had a big grocery business in Queen Street over sixty years ago. Mrs. Moi-in | resided in Auckland from her early girl--1 hood. She whs a sister of the late Mr. I William Maude, one of the early mangers lof the branch of tbe Union 'Bank, in I Auckland. Deceased had a clear soprano 1 voice, and was a frequent soloist at the concerts of the Choral Society, and she j was also for many years a leading member of the choir at St. Matthew's Church. Mrs. Morrin was a great worker in the -parish, and possessed a benevolent nature. Fifteen years ago Mrs. Morrin ] removed to Otahuhu, but her death oc--1 cored at the residence of her son-in-law at Whangarei. Deceased ia survived by a large family. The sons are Messrs. : Laurence, Carsley, and Vincent Morrin, and Meadamee R. S. Ballantync, A. Littler, of Devonport, W. J. Oeddis, Wellington, M. Dell, Otahuhu, and A. L. Shepherd, Whangarei. MR. A. O. LAPWOOD. An old settler of the Auckland district, Mr. Alfred Octavious Lapwood, waa buried at the Tuakau Cemetery this afternoon. He had attained the advanced agje of 78 years. Deceased was born at Newington Green, Stoke Xewinsrton, England, and entered the Royal Navy ait the age of 14 years. He came to New Zealand in _he ship Garage-.' in 18-4, and settled In the Waiketo. For having eerrerl has full terra as a volunteer during the war, Mr. Lapwood was given a freehold of 131 acres of land at Tua-tcau South. He ia survived by his wife and a grown up family.
