A VOLSTEAD FLEET.
PURSUIT OF RUM-RUNNERS. WASHINGTON, November 9. i Following - conferences between the Federal Prohibition Commissioner, Mr. Haynes, the President, Mr. - Calvin Coolidge, and . the Secretary ,of i the Treasury, Mr. A. W. Mellon, plans were approved for a Congressional appropriation, of probably £1,000,000 for the construction of specially-designed sea craft, patterned on submarine chasers, for the purpose of combating rum-run-ners on the Atlantic Coast. The vessels will be capable of overhauling the fastest smugglers, and in conjunction with the right-of-search treaty with. Britain, it is expected will greatly reduce illicit liquor importations. Tbe "dry" crusade instituted by:.the Mayor of Chicago, Mr. Devers, continues unabated. He has closed 4031 saloons, soft drink parlours, and drug stores for illicitly selling- liquor. Five police captains have been discharged for accepting bribes, and a thousand persons are being held on charges of violating the "y law. Mr. Devers estimates that drunkenness for the period has been reduced by 35 per cent while crime and arrests of motorists for driving while intoxicated have greatly decreased.— (A. and N.Z. Cable.)
