TICKLISH CARGO.
HANDLED AT AUCKLAND. CJLAss.UXK]) VATS. The Auckland wntersidera had to nandie some unusually bulky cargoes last month, particulars of which aro given'in a report by the traffic manager which was submitted to the Harbour Board yesterduy. After commenting that the feature of the ,-argo worked in August was the large number of heavy lifts of machinery, etc., the manager says these were largely for development purposes! First in "importance were- the large turbines lor Horahora, which would each develop the power of any one of the six single units at present installed. The New Zealand Co-operative Dairy J-ompany also imported five huge flasslined vats, whh'u required e.ureraelv careful handling. The railway, on account of their limited clearances' could not carry these. However, they were loaded on to motor lorries by the floatir." crune and safely delivered at Paorata. a distance oi about 2S miles. The s.s. Mahana also brought a number of the guns and searchlights which were removed from H.M.s. New Zealand before she was scrapped. These, it is understood, are to be mounted at various New Zealand ports. With the resumption of operations in the New South Wales coal mines larpe quantities of Australian coal also commenced to arrive, and will likely continue for some time.
