When spoken to by the guard shortly , after he left Mercer he explained that he , intended taking out an extension, but > was not requested to. He said he got down to Auckland Station with just a . few minutes to catch the train, and only had enough loose change to buy his wife's , through ticket and himself a ticket to Mercer. The Magistrate said the Department did quite right in bringing a prosecution, but there was doubt as to whether defendant intended to elude payment. Mr. Strang (for accused i cause laugh- j tcr by remarking that there was some excuse for a man only married a few days forgetting anything?
