TURF TALK FROM THE SOUTH.

CANTERBURY. ! (By Telegraph.—Special to "Star.") CHRtSTCHCnCH. Friday. Wonderrul to relate, the weather has kept tine, and trainers in botli branches of the sport have been able to give their horses more real work. The tracks at Rlccarton are rapidly improving, and the going to-morrow for the hunt meeting should be very fair. There' was a fair amount or galloping yesterday morning, but not one or really special note on the flat. Carawork and Blue Socks were sent once round over Tour flights or hurdles, and both gave a good display. Carawock comparing quite favourably with his companion. Red Down and Falstaff wore , to have been schooled In company, but FalstafT Tell at the first night, and rte.d Gown went on by hrrself at a medium pace, jumping cix nights. Jazz more than held his own when jumping rour hurdles with the moreexperienced Matatua and llereweare. Ramaniwhlrl; lala Bank. Mettle Drift. and Orange BltTctis weTe schooled over the big rences.' The llrst named did best, but Orange Bitters jumped well to the last rence, where he blunderpd and lost his rider. The other pair railed to show any dash. Bon Spec, alone, dashed over four flights or hurdles In a brilliant manner. Zeus and Bed r.PTit went out to Jump the big rences in company, but Red Cent made a faulty jump and lost his rider. Zeus' rider waited for Red Cent to be remounted, and the pair completed their tasK satisfactorily. Mr. P. T. Ilogan arrived rrom Timaru last night with Avispado, Gnncase. Rhoboro, Rorke's Drift. Chinatown, and Master Peter. Northern horses to arrive during the past few days are Stream, Axle. Mountain Signal. CheeY L'p, Rowan, and Petunia. Trainers at New Brighton have a pull over their conrreres on other tracks, which have been closed when the seaside course was available. The sun and drying wind or to-day have made a vast difference to the Addlngton track, which will be opened ror the first time to-morrow. Trainers have had the use or the small training track ror the past fc-w days, but it has been hopeless ror rast work. There was a large number of horses at work yesterday on the New Brighton track, which was in much better condition than was expected, although naturally on the heavy side. Wallroon and Wild Thyme started off together, and were later joined by the trotter Tiny Moon, the trio going about two miles. Wild Thyme worke-d particularly well, and iv evidently on the top of his form. Wallroon. too, seemed to appreciate the sort going, and, despite a bad break, was al=o seen to advantage, and, although looking somewhat on the llyht side. Tiny Moon showed plenty or speed and stayed well. Mbhidara and J'risrilla Dean were responsible Tor a userul work out at New Brighton yesterday. The rornier paced well, but her companion appeared to best advantage. Mr. A. <i. Wilson has got I'riscilla Dean very well, and if she keeps sound slip should race well in some or the three-year-old classic events this season. She Is a very line quality looking lllly. which has rurnished a lot during the last lew months. The big pacer Soprano Is still at work at New lirightoii, but with so many young improving horses coming on it "will be hard for him to win even over a mile course, which Is evidently his favourite distance. The Speedy milc-'r Olive Hur.n looks very well at present, and Mr. S. l-'rost has evidently given her plenty or work. The trotter Peter the First is worked regularly at New Brighton, and is trotting quite satisractorfly. in his races Hie pptereta gelding- Is slow to begin, but he seems to be Improving- In this resperi. ! Mr. \V. J. Tomklnson liar! his team aT Adding-ton. and the following did good userul pacing:—Snowshoe, Pearlie chimes. Wsmiirate, Many Aiidubon. and Kfan John Realm is still resting, but it is thought that ho will stand a preparation. The Aucklander Mr. \V. Mc.Mastrrs gave his pair, Hluewood and Promenade, solid work over a distance. They look well, and apparently Iheir trainer has round a means of keeping them in racing trim. Two visiting- horses. Prince Pointer ami Carmine, appear to be very well, and paced in good style. Hal Junior has shown signs or lameness, and will be blistered and turned out Tor a spell.
